Physics Ray Optics Mix Comprehension (MCQ)

A thin equiconvex lens of glass ( μ = 1.5) of focal length 0.3 m in air is sealed into an opening at one end of a tube filled with water . A concave mirror of radius of curvature 20 cm is cut into two halves M 1 and M 2 and is placed at the end of the tube as shown in figure. The principal axes of the mirrors are separated by 1 mm each from the principal axis of the lens. The gap left between the two mirrors is covered by an opaque substance. A monochromatic point source
S emitting light of wavelength λ = 5000 Å is placed 0.9 m to the left of the lens. The light reflected from M 1 and M 2 form interference pattern on the left end AB of the tube.

The correct answer is:
CHECK THE SOLUTION.

Ans.

(i)

Sol. For lens = ( μ – 1)

=

⇒ R = 0.3 m

= +

= +

⇒ v = 1.2 m

(ii)

Sol.

For mirror 0 = 1 f = – 10 cm u = 0.2 m

⇒ v = – 20 cm

= m = = = – 1 inverted

Distance I 1 I 2 = 4 mm.

(iii)

Sol. = = 1.25 × 10 –4 m

= 0.1125 mm

= 112.5 μ m
